I went back and re read the article, and yes I am asking that there be an open discussion about fly rod design. And particularly rods that help and enable fishermen solve real world problems that they face while fishing. I think my own evolution as a fly fisherman is a n example of why I think such a discussion would be great. I began fly fishing again a number of years ago with a 9' tip flex rod and clousers. As I began fishing with other flies and trying to use more sophisticated techniques of presenting the fly I became frustrated with that rod. I switched to a 9' mid flex rod and that was better for most situations, but it didn't seem to have the backbone I was looking for. I have finally ended up with a rod (The Stick) that is long, supple, and has backbone. I can make a soft delicate cast, cast long if I need to, and manage my line much better. I feel I have a rod that is multidimensional and that I can grow with. I'm happy. Line mangement is a critical piece of the fishing experience/equation and what happens after the fly is in the water. How is the fly being presented. How is it seen by the fish? I wish that more was written about this sort of thing as well, much like your recent article in Fly Fisherman magazine. I wish that rod manufacturers would get beyond casting and get involved with the role the rod plays in this aspect of fishing.
