Subject: Re: Salt Water Fly Fishing, Dec. 2002, Deceptive Fly Rod Article....

Jay, If I remember my journalism course very little was said about writing articles for profit. What was taught was that if the magazine was filled with good articles than people would buy it and the publishers would than be able to sell their advertising space.I see nothing wrong with expecting a high standard from our flyfishing magazines. It surprises me that people who do or who think a bit differently than what is promoted as main stream are criticzed because they do or because they refuse to follow and honor the dicta set forth by some supposedly in the know.I turned to flyfishing to enjoy the old not the new, and enjoy reading old articles and books by some of our great writers of the past.I see nothing wrong with expecting our flyfishing magazines to adhere to this standard.I dont have a problem with the components that go into a magazine, casting column, flytying column etc, as these are to be expected, as are travel articles, and equipment articles , but I do think many articles are written by those with limited experience and or time on the water or in the area. Many location articles are written by a guest writer who has not fished the area that he is writing about very much. Many topics are covered in a very shallow way and as a result there is little depth to many articles. Read the Bahamas article in the magazine referred to and tell me that it is not poorly written, lacking many important facts and details that could have made it much more informative and interesting. The article on beach replenishment, a topic close to my heart, also misses the mark in that it mentions NJ. but fails to mention the devastating effects of the $50million beach project in this area. There were recently an article on jetty fishing in NJ in FR@R written by someone from Pennsylvania who never mentioned the beach project or the ruination of many jetties here in Monmouth county NJ. The article on Extreme flyfishing never mentioned any jetties in jetty country but was actually about the Barnegat inlet jetty which is 20 mile to the south of jetty country. Now I recognize that the author was from out of state but how could he have missed the fact that there are over 100 jetties in Monmouth County and that is where jetty country is, and that alot of great jetties have been turned to rubble and many others have been so filled with sand that they no longer have deep pockets around them that hold fish like in the past. The pictures featured him on a jetty tip with trout waders on and no corkers. So when I see articles like this I have to wonder about the thought, time and energy that went into them and I have to question the knowledge and wisdom of the editors who let these articles into their magazines. Mike
