I obviously didn't state my position on the magazine issue very clearly, as I am in agreement that the scope and breadth of what they will publish is abysmal. My opinion was not meant in defense of the publishing business, but rather was intended sarcastically.
I actually had a story idea rejected with the editor's comment," It sounds too cold." His point was that they would only publish destination pieces to places with balmy breezes, palm trees, and sunny skies. Like THAT hasn't been done to death.
I had a feature killed this year after it was completed, because a big name fly fisherman sent them one that was, " Similar." When the big name piece was published, not only was it in no way similar to mine, but every single word of it had been previously published TWICE in said, " Big Name Author's," books.
But big names sell more magazines.
My apologies to Ken for the tone of my remarks about his involvment in the business of fly fishing. I think that everyone deserves to be recompensed for their labors, and their level of involvement is, frankly, none of my business or concern. I do believe that no matter how far you hold the two pieces apart, that you are firmly entrenched in the business of fly fishing. Your motivation is none of my business and I did not mean to infer that it was. My personal opinion is that your message would be stronger were it not laced with so much criticism and sarcasm.
And for the record Ken, no one has ever paid me for any sort of, " Expertise,' and I fear that you have seriously over-estimated my value and earning power in this regard.
Lastly I would just like to mention that although it is not a commonly held view with regards to fly fishing, I believe that it is possible to write well and thoroughly about a subject without being the world's foremost practitioner of it. I seriously doubt that Grantland Rice could throw a football like Y.A. Tittle, or strike an iron like Bobby Jones, but I am glad that he wrote about those things nonetheless.
At least, that is the theory that I am using to justify my involvement in writing.
