Subject: Re: Salt Water Fly Fishing, Dec. 2002, Deceptive Fly Rod Article....

Getting back to John's letter to Art Scheck, well said John! I haven't read the article in question - my subscriptions to most of the magazines expired a couple of years ago and I have no inclination to renew them, other than to provide some warmth on a cold New England January night!

Fast action rods have their place as do 'traditional' actions. One of the joys of flyfishing is in its many traditions and at the same time the boundaries which are continually being explored. Amongst my favorite memories and experiences is drifting in a clinker build wooden boat on Lough Conn in Co. Mayo, Eire, with a 20 knot wind whipping up a big wave and fishing a "team of three" on a through actioned spaghetti stick to wild browns and the occaisional Atlantic Salmon. Attempt this with a fast tip actioned rod and you would quickly discover what high blood pressure really means! In contrast, stalking bonefish at Christmas Island or in the Bahamas, casting into the ever present trade winds, I wouldn't be without my Loomis GLX. Fishing a big flatwing and one or two droppers in a big surf and plenty of wind, roll-casting and mending, I have come to love the medium actioned rods which I had relegated to my basement until Lefty Kreh showed that they cast just as well as any other rod given the right technique.

A helpful article would describe how the different rod actions can help us to achieve the 'holy grail' of perfect presentation in different situations. Where the question is asked with such grace and purity of form that the fish is compelled to answer - "Yes".

I cannot imagine any other purpose for a fly rod.
