There's a tounge in cheek fishing series out there called "Fishing with John". One episode has John with Tom Waits on a drunken fishing trip across Jamaica to a rusty old barge. At one point Tom tells an interesting fishing "story" and during actual fishing Tom puts a freshly caught snapper in his shorts, great stuff! The episodes with Dennis Hopper in Thailand hunting the elusive giant squid and Ice fishing with William Defoe rank among my favorites. Glad to see there are more Tom Waits fan fishermen out there! It is often blasting on my way to my favorite fishing holes. On the subject of bragging, I feel everyone of us has been guilty here and there to greater and lesser degrees. I agree with Ken that it can be a way of compensating for a lack of great fish in ones life. But do think even in that realm most of it is harmless desire for great fish in ones life and if they do come by skill or even luck some or all the bragging subsides. The best fish are kept all to yourself and some the single fish nights become more memorable than the bump every cast nights. Besides the best braggarts say as little as possible and let all the fledgling braggarts create the legend for them. Historically bragging is synominous with fishing. personally I feel it's like Plato's cave anology you find things about your surroundings and yourself that at first you were totally unaware. Fishing is great that way, it's healthy. While I talk this Zen in fishing crap a few truly mystical nights/days might turn biblical when recounted as time and memory fade while my passion grows. Sometimes it is trully fun to listen to these stories if you have basic knowledge that exceeds the story teller. It was also fun when the story teller was a dad or mentor and we took it as gosphel. In the immortal words of Mr. Waits, "we're all gonna be just dirt in the ground".
