I of course have been analyzing and studying these events since last week. I could not wait for you to get back, so I did the next best thing I could think of I went to see another old friend. He told me from his easy chair some things I had forgotten or simply never learned. I don't know why it is that a young man and an old man can share a deck for years, but the knowledge doesn't pass so easily.

He never liked guns, didn't think it was fair to shoot a fish that was simply coming to see what had him. This sometimes would happen at the beginning of a fight, and if you shot him then the shark never had a chance. He told me we never used a stationary boat, for the same reason you said and that it was his way of insuring that the fish wouldn't end up jumping into the cockpit. The captains work is important to this fight. He told me we never brought a green Mako to the boat. Let the fight play out. These are dangerous fish, the angler needs to tire them. He likes harpoons better than flying gaffs for safety reasons. He told me a shark can sometimes through a flying gaff hook and they can come back with deadly speed. He told me always dart the fish behind the fist dorsal because when you pull him back you want the tail not the teeth. He told me that when you have the fish tail roped be very careful cleating them off close because they have the strength to back themselves into the boat with their pectoral fins only. He liked bang sticks to finish a fish, but only after it was tail roped. Another old timer just gave me one to use.

This is under my skin and I have a strong need to kill one. I will be setting out with my own green crew on my boat thurs morning, weather permitting. No choice.

I never read the book. I know you think I should and I will. I am learning all the time, getting a little better every day. Thanks for your help.
