Anywhere means anywhere behind the dorsal. I should have been more clear. Sharks are like eels as your friend says. Personall I do not like fishing for them but they used to be there clipping and the clients liked it. Bang stick was the only safe way to bring them in and the buggers never would die even after you shot them and they would bite even hours after they were dead. If you tail roped them close they would wear the paint off the boat with their sandpaper hide. To me they are very uninteresting fish. Mako's are more of A FISH than the rest of them I have a ho hum attitude about all sharks. I do not see them as top line predators at all but as scavengers and cowardly. I do not think of them as sport fish because of the times I grew up in. To catch sharks was some thing you did to entertain the clients on a slow day. Hollywood created the shark fishing interest through Jaws. That movie was not about sharks. It was about The Cricket and glamorized shark fishing. Glamor is an old Celtic word for illusion. So... Bang stick is safer than any gaff as they will roll up on a flying gaff and they will twist a straight gaff out of your hand.
They are like eels with nasty skin and teeth and an ability to live and take a bite out of you after they appear dead.
They are beautiful and I have no idea why they are considered to be trophies except in Hollywood terms. Of them all, Mako's, Porbeagles and Whites are the most interesting. Mako's can fight better than the rest and they do jump after a fashion but like I said I like to catch fish with backbones as they fight better fight harder and I am bigoted about sharks and cannot get excited about them. I am not saying I am right just opinionated against catching them.
