That's a very nice entry, particulary about the old ocean front summer haunts and solitude.
To your point on lighter gear, it really comes down to the weakest link though, doesn't it? Tippet, leader, line strength. I can see the need as in some trout fishing with light tippet for example.
I must say though I've never been too keen on playing fish or with the idea that downsizing tackle makes things somehow more sporting or "fair"
I know you said you were taking fish quickly but I see nothing wrong with cranking dinks in and getting on with it, overpowered and released.
To each his own I suppose and of course there are exceptions as some whose physical condition may require lighter tackle.
Oh and no grousing here, lol, just a different take.
