I totally understand your point and it is a good one.
I like to fight fish with the butt of a rod and not with the shaft of the rod so there is not any problem in handling fish with lighter gear. I also have been fishing for stripers with a fly rod my whole life and always used C line rods up until the time of graphite. There were no nine wights as an A line was an 8wt and no one I knew ever used a rod that heavy for stripers. Bend the tree and so it grows.
The reason I mention lighter tackle is simple.
The modern take on salt water fishing is heavy tackle oriented and there is room for expansion and embracing the tradition of lighter gear and there is merit in fishing with it but you have to try it yourself to recognize it.
One thing lighter gear does do is eliminate the disrespectful category of, "Dinks".
It will give you a bit of respect for all sizes of fish and that is a good thing to have in ones heart I believe.
As you say to each his own and I agree.
So it is normal for me to go lighter and like it and I am used to it.
