July 15th, 08
The second day we fished in the trout management area and although it was a Sunday and there were many, many people fishing in all the well known pools we walked a bit and found that we had the river to ourselves. Steve, “The Fisherman,” from the boards took us to his cache of secret spots which by the way seem to be endless and always in-between the long silky pools where most folks fish. A short or long walk either upstream or down from a parking spot and around a bend or two and you can imagine that you are in the 18th century wilderness again. There are no crowds if you are willing to walk for 10 to 20 minutes. Five minutes will not do it and if there is a well marked trail you may have to walk just a bit more.
Both Gary, the fellow we fished with on Saturday and Steve are walkers and because of that they see and get to know a lot more of the river than those of us who prefer to fish close to our car. Steve will often walk ¾ of a mile or more from a parking spot and fish his way back exploring nooks and crannies and finding fish along the way. This is a way of turning a day on the river into a mini -adventure and it makes your time on the water a bit more interesting and satisfying than standing in line waiting for your favorite spot in a pool to open up or driving from pool to pool endlessly hoping that you find one that is not crowded.
“Walking takes time but it does not waste it”.
