here in falmouth ma i have had the good furtune of being presented with a similar puzzle, which i fondly refer to as my current "fishing problem".
a nice gut feeding into a salt pond nightly finds itself full of feeding little bass. incoming, outgoing, slack, the bass are there and visibly feeding, as long as it is dark, or close to it. but i could not for the life of me get a fish to take a fly. the baits appeared to be in the 2 to 3 inch range, although i am not sure of their species.
after several nights of covering as many depths and areas of the water as i could, floating lines, sinking lines, this fly, that fly, these flies in conjunction etc, i finally managed to take a bass. it came several casts after i had put one piece of split shot above two rays flies and one black 5 inch flatwing. mend, mend, start the swing...pressure! i had found the proper depth. i would like to say that i then caught five fish on five casts, but i have not worked out the puzzle to such a degree. there are still many more presentations i get to try out here! but as you say, it is just so much fun solving this fishing puzzle. i just may head out there in a little while and try my hand at a few more presentations...
