I'm not an expert. I'm just a guy who reads a lot about fishing and then applies what I've learned in the "classroom." ;-)
The day Ken and I fished was actually a very slow day (we weren't the only ones who had a slow time...reports up and down the river on flyaddict reflected our experience). But we persisted, and brought a few fish to net.
I should add that in addition to a being a strike indicator and depth regulator, the other beauty of the yarn puffball is that it allows the flies to drift naturally at a prescribed depth in the water column. Of course, you can also swing the rig at the end of the drift and make drag your friend. I often find that trout will strike the nymphs as they drag and move upward, as if they are emerging flies swimming to the surface.
I think we spent as least as much time talking about fishing as we did fishing. Who knew five hours could pass so quickly?
By mid-June I will be fishing for trout almost exclusively in the Farmington; if anyone from the board is heading up and need a little show-around, feel free to contact me.
