I remember 10 years ago or so down at a well known flyfishing spot on the upper cape where there would be a minimum of 1/2 dozen if not more flyfisherman flairing away casting to an outflow at the mouth of the creek. Somedays there would be double the amount of flyfisherman if it were a weekend, if you took the time to observe the different styles of casting tecniques ,it was fairly easy to see who spent time with a "casting instructor" that was "schooled" in the world of high line speed casting. There would be times when there were just too many flyguys standing on the finger bar that leads to the mouth and drop off ,so I would stand back and watch for awhile, it seemed that it was more important to cast than it was to actually fish! After a minimum of 6 false casts the final presentation cast would be made ,followed by the rod shoved under the armpit so the forearms could be rested on the stripping basket to perform the 2 hand strip retrieve. If you timed the amount of time it took to cast and compared it with the amount of time the fly was in the water the cast would win hands down. Over the past years the amount of flyguys at this spot has diminished to only a handful of guys and thats on a weekend ,( there are days during the week when I have this place to myself)for the most part the mutiple false casting crew has disappeared and has been replaced with fisherman that use a fly rod to fish and not to wave their line in the air. I wonder if this is a direct result of the way people were taught to cast and found it difficult so they lost interest and gave up.
