Al you didn't when you plan to fish here or whether you had access to a boat. I'll throw you some tips based on fly fishing from shore early to mid-June. Most people fish the northern end of P.I. where the Merrimac River dumps into the ocean. And I mean dumps. As in thousands and thousands of fish. The problem with fishing the mouth is that you'll find yourself shoulder-to-shoulder with hordes of other fisherman all yelling to eachother about whether that 12inch schoolie might be a keeper. Give it a pass. The parking area is open all night, so a midnight raid on a falling tide is doable. The P.I. beachfront has fish all the time. So they tell me. Being the worst beach fisherman ever, I wouldn't know. The beach is steep so high tide is the way to go. You can access the beach from the lot mentioned earlier and walking to the mouth. Lots of walking. The lot at Atty May's restaurant is currently closed due to storm dammage. If you drove onto the island and headed straight for the ocean you would end up in this lot. I suggest taking a right turn as soon as you get on the island and head south. You will enter the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge. Currently only the first lot is open. The rest of the refuge beach access is closed for the piping plovers. Thats alright because the beach at parking lot #1 fishes very well. So they tell me. My advice is to skip all of the above and head for Sandy Point State Park at the extreme southern end of P.I. If you tell the folks at the refuge gate you are going to Sandy Point they will not charge you to drive through the refuge. However. Because the refuge beaches are closed, parking at Sandy Point fills up fast and early. I've never been hasseled staying there after dark but who knows. The first lot gives access to the ocean front beach. Allow me to brag. I've caught fish here. From this area you can fish your way around the southern end of P.I. and up into the Parker River. The Parker in early to mid June has some very good fishing. Lots of schoolies with quite a few horses thrown in. Personal expience! I've said more than I should have. The water is clear so I go with smaller flies in daylight and larger flies at night. If possible lean towards the night fishing, Al. I've enjoyed your posts over the years. Keep them coming. If this doesn't help there is a very good fly shop on RT1 in Rowley. They know their stuff and can help out.
