Impressionistic paintings look like the objects that are portrayed. Impressionism is not a vague rendering of of an unclear object. It is the use of pure color in various amounts to create different colors without mixing those colors with each other in one single pool of paint. Flatwings are Impressionistic in this sense not in the sense of vagueness or unclear representations. They can and do create flies that are imitative of particular species. There is a misunderstanding of the words meaning in some fly tyers vocabulary. It means creating the image through the "Disipline of Impressionism," which simply means using colors that move and form other colors while retaining their original hue. They are not vague attractor patterns but accurate representations depending on how they are tied.
