Subject: Sand eel colors, Mar 2002

I have been looking at the colors of sand eels for quite a while underwater and they really do come in all colors and sizes. They don't all burrow into the sand and lots of them just rest on the bottom on their sides. I think that there are a lot of stories about sand eels and their behavior that are not based on fact but rather on stories and myths that fishermen pass on from one to another without questioning. I sure do know that fishing close to the surface with flies tied to imitate them works better many, many times than fishing them close to the bottom. It would seem to make sense that there are a lot of things to be discovered about them that might help us catch more fish consistantly in more different condititions than I have heard about to date. They often work when fished close to the bottom but it is not the only or the best way to always fish them. One thing that is obvious is the great amount of movement in the naturals as compared to the stiff and rigid type of flies that are often tied and used to imitate them. That might account for some of the difficulty encountered with fish that are feeding on them from time to time.
