If you want to use a fly rod that makes sense and will not stress the fish then perhaps a 48 weight or a 36 weight would be more reasonable. That would be a 4 oz rod and 3 oz rod. We have a ways to go on this type of fly fishing before there is a common denominator on the weight of tackle that is right. I caught thousands of school tuna back when I was a young man and they are a lot of fish to handle with any control on a tiny brittle rod like a twelve weight (a one oz. rod) the way they are made today. I would recommend a fiberglas rod that bends all the way down with a butt and a half and a light tip with oversized guides and a close stripping guide and a lot of extra guides to keep the arc smooth. A beefed up ugly stick with a soft tip for the short cast and the bottom six feet conforming to a 20 lb or 30 lb rod would be adaquate and would allow you land a fish in a decent amount of time. That is the way that this tackle will eventually go and fishermen with experience should be designing this tackle not engineers. And the he** with looks until the wheel is invented and the corners are smoothed out. Just my opinion.
