I would agree - but with this added. Don't look at the baitfish fly patterns - but look at the baitfish. Making copies of other interpretations is helpful but looking at the model from life is what gives your creativity the chance to sing with your own ideas and interpretations. Everyone sees differently. We see colors and interpret them and notice them differently.
Some people see violet and it is such a strong visual element that they do not notice the pink that is right next to it. That is the way we are made and there is not a standard way of interpreting which color is important and which is not and can be ignored. Seeing color is subjective and free to individual interpretation. Try the flies you come up with on your own and tie others that you know work and use droppers and let the fish tell you which is best on that day. That is the only way to break out of fixed routines that limit your ability to come up with new designs based on nature not on other peoples should's and ought's. We all need to be encouraged to experiment not to remain fixed. That is one of the greatst joys of creative flytying. Anyone can tie what has already been created but it really does shut down creativity and replaces it with a dogma that cannot adapt to change.
