People will react by laughing when they are tickled. People will laugh when you tell them a joke. Is it the same? Fish will hit a fly because they believe it is food and fish will hit a fly when it is pulled fast through the water. Is it the same? A reaction strike can catch fish and so can good presentation with the right fly. Is it the same? Both work and both work well but are both methods the same? They both catch fish and that is the same but a fly that catches fish through fast movement is catching them because the fish is reacting to the movement and often the same fly will not catch a fish without that sustained or sudden movement. When a fish swims up to a fly, he is interested in eating it. When the fish stops and follows it is because something about the fly causes him to change his initial intent. Something is wrong. A sudden movement often cause the fish to react and grab the fly. Just as often the fish does not react and turns away. When a fish says yes and then his caution stops him from following through and eating it then something about the fly or the surroundings has alerted him to the extent that he becomes cautious but remains curious. The fish can be caught but not necessarily because he has been fooled by the fly. A lot of fish are caught through reaction and a there are many flies that work from this principle. They attract attention and when manipulated correctly overcome the caution of the fish. It is easier to catch fish through reaction than by fooling them into taking a fly because they believe it is the real thing. Both methods are deadly and different. Thousands of bass are caught each year by anglers who fish one day a year during the fall run by casting a popper as far as they can and reeling it in as fast as they can. It works and if you ask them how they do it they will say cast as far as you can and reel like hell! There are times however, when it doesn't work. I prefer those times.
