For myself, and I mean only for myself, I prefer to not use them. I have tied a few, actually one, Razzle Dazzle with lead eyes. I tied it many years ago to try in a specific spot with a lead core head on the end of a slime line to fish a ledge just off the high rocks at Prices neck in Newport. I made the cast, it hit the water and as it was sinking a 16 lb. bass rose up from the deep ledge and took it solidly. I landed the fish and rerigged. I gave the fly away to the person I was fishing with and I've been batting 1000 with lead eyes on Razzle Dazzles ever since. I did put the eyes on under the shank so that the fly would swim. Flatwings move a lot and the bend of the hook will interfere with the movement. Paul Apuzzio uses this same principle when he ties his Razzle Dazzle variation. He ties a chartreuse one and a blue and white one. He is an old time striper fisherman who has lots of experience catching big fish with conventional tackle. He loves to fish for big fish with a fly rod and he has spent a lot of time fishing for them in the mouth of the Housatanic with heavy sink tips, His method is to cast and let the fly swing under control. He does not cast and strip. His largest bass to date is a 49 1/2 pound fish. Which is the largest striper I know of taken on a fly rod in many many years. He caught that fish last year or the year before. It is not the only really big fish he has taken using these flies with deep swings. Lead eyes on Razzle Dazzle's work. He swings them just like he learned to swing a jig with conventional tackle years ago. It is a deadly technique. Lead eyes can be used on smaller flatwings easily. Do they work? Absolutly! Is it new? No. It's fishing with the most effective lure ever designed by man. A jig. The Government puts them in survival kits for good reason. I don't think they will ever add flatwings flies to that kit.
