That's a good question. I have found that fish are often very particular about color at night. Not always but often. Many people ascribe to the belief and I mean belief not theory, that black is the only color you need at night and for them it is true. If you only use black then all your fish will be caught on that color. I use droppers and because of that I fish with more than one color at a time. Many times I will tie on a black fly as the tail fly and do real well then the fish will switch and start to take one of the other flies that is a different color and I won't cauch any more on the black fly at all. It's just the way it happens and it is not what position on the leader I put the fly that matters either. If I move it from the tail to the head the fish will still hit the same fly and not the others. Spin fishermen who use swimming plugs find the same is true for them some nights black bombers will outfish every other pulg cast after cast and there are nights when the black one and a blue and silver will work just as good but you can't buy a fish on a yellow one. There are nights when yellow will outfish any other color. People who fish a great deal have many theories about why this is true and most have learned about it by being outfished by their companions for no apparent reason execpt the color of the lure. I have experienced the same thing myself and have been unable to hook up until I swiched over to the color that is working. Often there is more than one color that will get results and there is often more than one color that won't. That is the beauty of droppers they give the fish the final word on what will or won't work. They do an excellent job of telling you what they want if you give them a chance to tell you their choice.
