The flatwing did not evolve from the deceiver but from the Nine three to the Joe's smelt to the Eel punt to the Razzle Dazzle. Using color came from Impressionism in painting and movement in the fly from using space as a sculptuaral material like a, "Mobile sculpture," and by balancing the materials so they would swim together as a unit. Some people do not like that - but that is the way the flatwing evolved.
The bullet head bug that was used by Waterman was a great fly with a great shape when pulled underwater. I remember reading somewhere in one of the old magazines that taking the cork off the front and putting on a bucktail collar instead of a wound hackle collar gave the same look underwater and the fly stayed submerged all the time. I believe that was what was written about the origin of the Deceiver.
The two flies act differently and look differently in profile underwater and they both work extremely well.
