Couldn't make the link work, but I do remember he had some good articles on some of the early swimmers done by Musso and Pinchney and how he used to fish them. I don't use the computer cause I'm not that savy, but I do sketch, copy, etc as well to sort out the beginnings of an idea. Often, I'll just put a piece of wood in the lathe and think about a certain situation and go from there. For the most part, what we're really doing is reinterpreting other people's ideas, and that's okay cause we're adjusting them to our own particular functional and esthetic needs and desires.

Where it gets really interesting is carving the plugs by hand. (jack knife, file, hasp, barrel stake shaper, etc.) It's more time consuming, but can be immensely satisfying. I've got a simple sort of slab sided one that I did three years ago that's been repainted several times. Finally retired it cause I was afraid the law of averages was gong to catch up to me. I'll scrounge it up and post it.

The water balancing was an eye opener when another plug maker told me I should be doing it. Much more consistency with each plug now.

It's kept me up nights thinking about an idea before.
And for me, it can be very theraputic to see something that I can actually hold and see at the end of the process.
