The more line you have out of the tip the heavier the line functionally becomes. The loops are more stable and flow better. They do not drop at slow speed. The line is rated at thirty feet every foot that is out more than that increases the grain weight that loads the rod. The DT is a beautiful casting line and you can hold a lot of line in the air smoothly. It is a presentation - mending - fishing line first and not a shooting line first.
People have been trained to think shooting and casting rather than fishing and mending for a long time.
I have a beautiful 8 Wt. double taper that is made out of silk. I would use it on that rod you are talking about in a heartbeat and if the rod is soft enough to load with a short line I would not have any problems with it on moderate casts or long casts as the weight increases as more line is out.
The only things I would need to have within the rod is the flexability to load the rod fully without silly false casting for line speed at short range and the fishing softness in the rod to always load easily and the recovery strength to mend a long line from its midsection.
