I imagine there may be some times when using a tapered leader or tying your own leaders of mutiple line sizes is useful but I just haven't seen the need in the striper fishing I do.
In trout and salmon fishing I do use tapered leaders and have tied up loads of them over the years so it's not that I haven't done it, it's just that it isn't necessary. The more I fish, the more I realize simpler is generally better!
Good luck and have fun. One of the dangers of making fly fishing filled with techie stuff is that it diverts our attention from fishing and having a good time.
