Furled leaders are handmade from tying thread or mono. They are much more supple than tapered mono leaders. They turn over much easier than mono leaders. They can be made to float or sink depending on how you intend to fish them. Therefore they can be used for dry fly fishing or subsurface fishing. You make them by building a board with pegs at various distances, wrapping the thread around the pegs and then spinning them to add the twists. I've made several dozen from different types of thread. They have improved my presentation immensely thus improving my catch rate.
