There are many different ways to use droppers. Lots of them. I would say do not use the method of tying to the bend of the hook as that is a very ineffective way to hook fish. It may work on trout but is doesn't with stripers which makes me think that it doesn't work well on trout either but... I prefer to have the dropper trace come out towards the point fly not facing the rod.
I like my fly to lay along the leader very short so it never fouls and never spins. Also I do not trust an acute angle in my leader when fighting a fish. To me it is a very weak mechanical connection.
I also find that the longer the dropper lead the more problems I have with tangles on sloppy casts. I prefer 18" between flies as it works best for me over all. I do not like shorter lengths or longer ones as that spacing seems tome to get more strikes from fish.
Everyone uses them to suit their own preferences however and there is no wrong way except the tying to the bend of the hook and the idea of trying to hold the fly away from the leader when casting which turns the fly into a helicopter which messes everything up.
