I think it has a half life of about 14,000 years give or take a couple of thousand. I would change if I got one of those "Feelings" that I should change it.
It is not organic it is petrochemical or some other non biodegradable substance. It probably qualifies as toxic waste in some P.C. dumps. (The dump police will be doing body searches of fly fishermen who have been reported to be trying to get rid of a inert substance known as backing. Be on the alert!)
The problem with backing is simple. No one knows - so It must be a problem that has not been marketed and fully developed with the full use of fear of failure as of yet.
I get a feeling - I change it.
