Have you read any steelhead drift fishing books? West coast stuff and Salmon fishing stuff. They are doing the same thing as you and have developed lots of techniques with rigging.
Those rivers are big, bigger and really really big and they are rocky as a mountain with powerful currents.
I have use those techniques for bass in breachways drifting big flatwings along the bottom and they work. Amazingly well actually.
