Tapered leaders, for me, was a carryover from trout leaders, where the theory is that you need to taper down to turn the fly over correctly. I don't know whether that's really true, but it certainly doesn't work that way, for me, with saltwater rods and lines and flies.

I also cut back to one fly if I think there's a chance of big fish. I am certain that I lost some big fish last year because there were a couple of hooks - snags - dragging around as they fought.
