Subject: Re: Bluegill imitation for bass

Hello Andrew, In illinois bluegills are legal for bait and catfishers use them to catch the large (80-100 lb) flatheads that live in the local rivers.
I recently drew up but have yet to tie, a short stubby, flat wing streamer, that I hope will imitate a bluegill. Don Blanton ties a fly that he calls the Fatal Attraction and I started there but instead of all of the flash, I changed it to hackle feathers to match the coloration of the blue gills. And I followed Ken's idea of using marabou for the orange and red colors at the head of the gill. I haven't tied one, but this is the direction and the source of inspiration. The Blanton fly has been very effective on small and largemouth bass in Midwester rivers and lakes. I tie it three sizes, small (10), medium (4)and large 0/1. All work. I just think that using a flatwing would create a fly that is fuller looking without. I'll post a photo when I finish one.
