Subject: livelining

Been taking some time the past 2 weeks to try and cash in on the pogy bonanza in the bay right now. I’m new to livelining pogies for bass but I assume it must be a good way to target larger fish. I noticed a couple of things. The schools are very spooky and will sound quickly or turn away if you approach too closely with the boat. To solve this I turn the boat off and drift in to close the gap between me and the school. If the pogies are pressured from fish below (which was never obvious from the surface until you were in them) they will not sound as I get close and will instead surround the boat. When this has been the case I could snag one, a hole would blow open around my fish in the school and teen size bass would come blasting through to intercept my fish not caring about the 4/0 weighted treble hanging out of the side of the pogy. That was a lot of fun and very cool to see but those situations were few and far between. VERY large bluefish are joining in over the past few days during these scenarios. My next move was to snag a few and throw them in a bucket to keep alive and head to an area I know holds fish and liveline them there. This is where I’m encountering problems. First I’m trying to figure out where to hook the fish to get them to do different things. I seemed to notice for the most part, behind the anal fin to swim on top and behind the dorsal or through the nose to go down (at least until they get tiered). Is there a way to keep them down that does not to disturb there swimming presentation (weight placement, etc.)? I’ve been using 3/0 trebles mostly and the bass have been wary to say the least. I’ll get surface inspections and fish following the bait in on the retrieve but no takers. Can they see the hook or is something else wrong? I was expecting them to suck the pogy up not check it out and turn away. If anyone has any suggestions I’d appreciate it. Thanks,
Tom
