Most non-fly fishing I’ve done over the last 5 years has been with conventional reels. The Striper Moon folks have kindled an interest for me in surf casting and with that a new appreciation of spinning reels, wooden plugs and of course surf. I loaded up a Penn 5600 Slammer with 30LB braid to obtain the quantity that that I understand I should have in the surf. That understanding is roughly that if I hope to ever cast 100 yards I should have another hundred yards to fight with. (I added that just in case I’ve been deceived and should be set strait) So far I have lost two good plugs to wind knot crack offs. I’m ready to dump braid as a spinning line unless someone can educate me on avoiding wind knots.
Do the “surf casting” spinning reels with the taller spools help avoid this?
