I've never really found a need for the long shock leader wrapped on the spool with spinning gear. I do frequently tie direct with a long leader (10 ft+) up through the eyes if I think it's necessary or I know I'll be cutting back a lot. The only issue I run into is when the casting frequency goes up with lures that cast very well and fast. The knot repeatedly bangs through the guides on each cast and can weaken over time eventually resulting in a break off. Frequently retying the leader can help to avoid this problem if you preffer a long leader. Even with a swivel you should be able to comfortably run a 5 to 6 ft leader and cast with any rod over 8ft. The long leader hanging from the tip will force you to smooth out your cast anyway
