I use a short doubled and twisted leader of twenty to thirty # about 2 1/2 feet and I double the line and twist it (spin it on itself) also. That gives me a stronger connection when casting with the twist in the guides and the doubled leader helps with abrasion and I have often caught fish with one strand broken. It is an old timer rig and it is worth learning how to do it. The swivel does help with line twisting a lot. The swivel stays outside of the tip top and the knot in the line gives you a, "Tick," signal as to when the lure is close.
I do not trust single strand leaders any more. No matter what they are made of or how heavy they are for good reason. When they break they break. Doubles give you a second chance to land that big fish and they do work. It is not theoretical. a double twenty allows the plug to swim better than a fifty or sixty single strand leader does. Sometimes with small plugs that makes a big difference as does the position of the snap (up or down) at times. I like to make my own snaps from Malin wire as it is hard and is light and not soft and bulky.
Soft wire snaps and oversize snaps are trouble and tying direct is not always the viable option.
I prefer double pure hard mono twenty or twenty five to 30# It fishes better. Even on surface plugs.
