Subject: conventional casting

For a while now I’ve owned a conventional setup for casting chunk bait. Since I don’t do too much of that anymore and I need a rod that can handle casting some of the heavier plugs in my arsenal, I’m thinking about dusting it off and giving it some playtime this season.

It’s an 11’ Lami XS11MHC (rated 3-8oz). I have a Penn 535GS to match. I am fairly consistent (but not 100%) using it with heavy dense payloads (lead w/bait, tins, pencils, etc) but I tend to have problems when trying to cast some of the heavier, less aerodynamic wooden swimmers. I’m looking for suggestions on modifying my casting stroke to handle these other types of plugs.

When I load it with lead the velocity of the bait goes fast enough to keep the spool from over running. Even with this setup I crank down the spool tension a little bit. The problem (and some of the more seasoned vets here probably already know what I’m about to say) is that the spool overruns when I cast a not-so-great casting plug. The lure velocity, in air, can’t keep up with the initial speed of the cast. So what do I end up with?... Either a really short cast, or even worse, a $30 line explosion.

Does line selection have a lot to do with using conventional gear or should the casting stroke vary for these two different types of casting? I love the rod and I like to find some more uses for it.
