I have been using casting reels for almost 60 years, I just bought my first spinning outfit this year. First of all, a rod rated 3-8 oz is way to heavy for casting plugs, get a rod rated for what you will be throwing, something around 8.5-9 ft, the new rods today are very light and you can cast them all day long, that big meat stick you have will be a killer, pick up a nice little Abu reel, a 6000 would be a good starter, my favoirite rod is a St Croix Premier, 8.,5 ft mod action rated 1/2 to 2 oz, for line I have used about everything out there and I keep comming back to Big Game 15 lb test, with a 40Lb leader. I put very little tension on the spool and let the thumb do the work, all it takes is practice and more practice.
