First decide on how heavy you want them , The plugging rod I use is rated 2 - 6 oz. The large cordel pencils are 2 1/2 oz. out of the package. I generally load and extra ounce to ounce and a half to achieve greater distance at the cape cod canal. But I'm fishing an area that has a extremely strong current pull that with the help of drag will keep the plug working on top. When fishing beaches I'll use pencils loaded with an extra ounce over the stock weight. Some guys load them with lead shotshell shot, I use 1/4 oz. egg/slip weights ,that way I don't have to keep weighing the amount I put in.I drill a 3/8 in. hole on the top back of the plug about an inch up from the rear, when you penetrate the outer shell there will be a hollow space about a half inch deep then there will be a solid section where the halves are come together ,keep going through, this is where the stock weights and rattle BB's are, depending on the amount of 1/4 oz. weights I'm adding will determine how many I place in the lower section and upper section. After the weights are loaded I seal the hole with 5 minute epoxy.
