Never done it myself but here's what I would do if I was to do it. ;-)

No need for a drill press. Just a clamp or vice and a hand drill is probably all you need (drill slowly if the wood is hard) .

Start with a small hole, maybe 1/8" but no bigger. Then I would get some malin wire (look it up it's used for shark fishing) and some oversize barrel swivels (bigger than the hole through the egg). Attach one barrel to a piece of malin with a haywire twist and slide through the egg. Then put another barrel through the malin on the other end and attach with another haywire twist. The wire will be longer than the egg but that shouldn't matter. I'd seal the egg with enamel paint or some other form of waterproof paint or epoxy.

You could probably do the thru wire like a plug as well for a little cleaner appearance. The malin wire approach could be done on site if necessary too. Quick and dirty.

After that just tie your leader to the desired length and have at it.
