Subject: Tuna on the Fly

Went on a large offshore fishing boat many years ago. Overnight trip to the Hudson Canyon. Owner of the boat "Consultation" is a Urologist friend of mine Lou Pastore. He drives a Red Corvette with special license plates that read "We We MD".
The trip was in late September with rough seas and 20 knot winds the whole way to the fishing grounds. Had a 9 weight rod with a $67 Orvis reel.
Tried tying flies in the cabin on the trip out. That was dangerous!
After roping up to a commercial lobster pot (illegally), the mates started a chum slick. The mates were busting my chops to cut bait on the way out.
I thought I was a guest!
I was tossing flies into the chum slick after sunset and looked down into the water to see a huge black mass darting back and forth. Lou came to look and stopped chumming for a few minutes. Then he threw a bait out and the tuna struck. Alas, he lost a 120 lb. or so Allison tuna at the boat.
A number of Mahi-Mahi made an appearance. I couldn't get a strike on my flies. I even saw one snoopp at the fly but it turned away. Maybe the bright lights put it down.
The mates caught a few Mahi-Mahi through the night but lost every tuna they hooked.
At daybreak the ocean exploded with life. The mates offered me a chunk of squid for the end of my fly. They laughed.
Then with the delicacy of a brown trout sipping midges, my fly disappeared into the mouth of a tuna. I had the presence of mind to set the hook and stood in disbelief as a sizeable tuna sped off with my fly line and some of my backing on it's first run.
Thinking I was in good shape, I put some pressure on the fish only to have another fifty or so yards of backing go screaming out the reel faster than anything I have ever seen.
I couldn't put enough pressure on the fish because the reel was inferior.
Needless to say I was lucky to get my backing back and have my rod survive. The tuna kept the fly, leader and fly line.
The mates told me to bring a sturdier rod next time with one of "those good gold reels".
There hasn't been a next time yet.
I still don't think I'd be prepared for anything like that again.
Is this story, or any part of it B.S.?
Which part?
Bragging? Not sure.
Hope you enjoyed it.
