Subject: 100 fish day!

No, I didn’t have one but the guys in the parking areas certainly have been over the past few weeks. More than once too. I thought this stuff only happened in the fall.

I usually just smile, nod and say wow, but it’s been kind of irritating lately. Apparently everyone else knows what they’re doing and I don’t. I come back empty handed a lot which usually gets the attention of somebody drinking their coffee in their car. I typically get called over to discuss what’s going on as I walk back to my truck with my gear (I guess they don’t like to even get out of the car to talk anymore).

“Hit any?” I get asked.
“A few.” or “It was slow.” is usually my response to faces I don’t recognize.

At this point the lecture usually begins about the incredible “100+ fish day” they, or there buddy had yesterday “dredging” the bottom with clousers or throwing “Storms” for 24 inch bass with the occasional 25 pounder in the mix. Riveting stuff.

They then begin to tell me what I can do to improve my numbers. “Try this...”, “Try that...” I guess they’re just trying to be friendly and helpful, but come on. I didn’t talk that much about the fishing to people I don’t know even when I thought I knew what I was doing.

Even on my best days from the boat in the past years, an outstanding day would be considered a dozen or more fish in the high teens to twenties. Or, only one fish in the 30 or 40 lb class over several hours. And even that would involve a lot of work. If people are having “100 fish days” it must be because they’re catching lots of shorts or they’re fishing on the side with a dragger. If not, these people should be getting medals or at least fishing commercially for a living. Maybe they should be writing the articles. :)
