Ben Taylor who used to guide in the Keys, Im not sure if he still does, has a great book out on fishing the keys bay and ocean flats and in it he recommends using the channels as a guide to find fish. The book can be used as a guideline for fishing Monomoy and other areas with flats. The fish by and large come up out of the channels and hug smaller indentations before crossing the flats.
Ive heard Jack Gartside and others tell of catching bonefish not on sight but by fishing the edges similar to fishing for stripers and catching fish.Bait fishermen by and large dont sight fish for tarpon but by and large tie off near a pass or bridge and wait them out.
Dont sell the Keys guides short, they know in all likelihood where the fish are going to be coming from and where theyre heading. My last time down I had some nice shots at tarpon on what can best be described as miserable conditons, heavy winds, clouds, borderline water temps. The first day it was so bad that I was the only nut out there but I had come too far to sit on my butt at the bar. It was too rough to pole and the guide tied up off a channel and for the conditions we saw a good number of fish but were only able to get a couple of casts off at them.We only got half of the second day in before the weather kod us but again he found fish by tying off near a channel.
If I remember right some New Englanders and others from the north sold southerners short back in 1861 and were kicked out of Bull Run, Manassas, Fredericksberg, Richmond and a number of other places before they caught on that these Southern people had some smarts.:]I wouldnt go down there thumpimg my chest telling them how smart youall are.
