Well the first time I visited the south circa 1950 I thought they did,I mean with the confederate flag flying all over and everybody calling us Yankees, I always wondered how the Red Sax fans liked being called yankees but thats for a different post. For a 3 -4 year to see separate restaurant and water fountains signs up this was quite an eye opener.I learned differntly in my history books but after speaking to my cousins's highschooler who moved to Va from NH Im not so sure any more. He told me that the Civil War is taught as the War of Northern agression in Va. high schools. The poor kid had an identity crisis.
And to make matter worse I was in New haven in Jan and at dinner an intellectual looking group sitting next to me were damning Lincoln in effect comparing his haste to start war with Bushs entry into iraq.. Now being a history buff and a big fan of Grant Sherman and Lincoln I took this kind of personally and since he was talking so loud I passed a crack only to get kicked in the shin by my wife and given a look they told me to keep my big mouth shut.
Their give away as intellectuals was that they certainly didnt look like fishermen.:]
