About seeing fish it took me to the last day to pick up that the guides were wearing brown eyeglasses.I found this out by mistake at the lodge when I was looking to buy a shirt and saw an eyeglass box labeled as such. Whether this would have made that much of a differnce I dont know but seeing fish is a good part of the game.If I get back Id bring an extra color or two.
The day out is normally 8 to 4 with lunch around 1. After heading inland in the am the guides frequently headed to the east beaches in the PM. I found this very excting as the fish I saw[but didnt catch] were big. There were also some big cuda and sharks hanging around the outside so you wanted to keep your balance in the boat.
There was a spot on the inside of a small ocean side cay the was a flat where schools of 100s and 100s of bonefish roamed. It wasnt easy to catch them but it was fun picking a few off here and there and watching the school pick up speed and change shape. The day after I visited it the next group waded it which looked fun, the problem theres some big shark there and the bonfish shark and cuda come in on the incoming.
On the inside flats the fish that I saw were singles pairs up to 10 or so fish, same with the ocean side however that one flat had big schools of fish. Generally the inside fish ran 3 to 5 lbs with some shots at bigger fish here and there. The ocean fish looked much bigger but were fewer and as the March winds were blowing it was hard to even get at them with wind and waves knocking you and the boat all around.Funny thing in the ocean on sand bottom you could see the fish swimming but as soon as they hit coral beds they dissapeared.Youd spot one get ready to cast and bingo theyd be gone and it didnt take me long to appreciate why theyre called the ghost of the flats.Ocean side fishing did put real demands on casting as the guide could not always get the boat into position for down wind casts and some casts more than 50 ft.had to be made into strong winds.
My biggest fish was about 5 lbs so I didnt get any 50 to 100 yard runs but even the little guys take off and get you to your backing or a liilte better. I hooked 2 fish that were a little bigger and popped the leader on both as I tried to prevent them from heading into the mangroves. Let them run mon said the guide Ill get them out.
For a few reasons the long run being a strong part of it and the weather being abit iffy we didnt make any runs to the west side of the island. There are few if any inhabitants on the west side and one of the reasons is because the natives think that the west side is possessed by spirits. One thing I was insured by two of the folks I fished with who had been there is that its inhabited by big bonefish and if I get back Id like to insure at least one day fishing there if possible.12 to 15 lb bonefish are a real possiblity there.Id say the oceanside fish i saw were 7 to 10 lbs, and the biggest fish inside I saw went 7 lbs or so. ......................... Ive been fishing since I was 5 which is 56 years and counting and have always been pretty much a do it alone on my own type of guy so Im not sure if I could ever get used to the guide being the more important side of the trip.He picks the spots knows where hes poling makes the decision to move or not he tells you where the fish are when to cast and when to strip. So he is really the captain for the day.It probably would be fun if you had some extra time off and an adventurist side to do some exploring to do some dyi bonefishing but Im glad that I got to give it a shot.
