When I was a kid I remember hunting with my Grandfather and one of the guys on the trip froze at the site of a big buck and never raised the rifle. I can see that happening with big tarpon. You see a shadow and they turn towrds you and get bigger and bigger. You need to get the cast off in a hurry and when making it figure the attitude and direction of the fish. And And when the fly hits water and you start stripping keep stripping when the fish moves towards your fly. That first fish, I think I got a little buck fever and stopped stripping about when the fish looked at the fly. We guessed the fish was 90 to 100 lbs.
The sun went in and out for another 15 minutes or so and we saw some fish out of casting range when out of nowhere two tarpon appeared about 60 ft from the boat, with the obligatory "duck" I cast and not bragging but put it right between the two just where I wanted it hoping for some competition between the two. I stripped and stripped a couple of times, and about when they showed some interst in the fly they saw the baot, and disappeared. How big fish like that can disappear so quickly is a mysyery to me but the do. Nice looking fish too 80 to 90 lbs said Lenny Roberts my guide that day. That was pretty much it becuase the weahter turned for worse and we took a beating getting back in.
That day I fished alone in Islamorada and when done I headed south to meet another Len, Len Moffo at Big Pine Key.I was supposed to fish three days with Len and a fellow named Frank LoPresti who had booked Len M for the week and had invited me to share the baot for a couple of days.
Ill go into this later.
