Islamorada is a beautiful place ocean on one side bay on the other,US one right thru it.Hate to admit it but I was first in the Keys in 1949 and 1952 and I still have some remembrance of those ealry rides on the road to Key West. You can fish Islamorada and never lose sight of the highway and can just go back and forth under the bridges between ocean and bay and be a very happy camper.
Islamorada has been built up over the years but I wouldnt call it overcrowded but it can get busy on the weekends.Once you leave it the road south is a wonderland and I could drive it everyday and be a happy man.The Sevenmile bridge that takes you south of Marathon is one fantastic place Ocean to your east, bay to your west. The expanse of wtaer is mind boggling and once on it I could see why it formed such an impression on me as a kid.If you have never been on it it is the new bridge next to the one blown up in True Lies.
Next day I met Len and Frank. Len trailored the baot quite aways becuase of the snotty conditions and we put in off of a state park south of Cudloe Key.We had a tough ride across open water and eventually came to a great spot out of the worst of the weather not far from the Air Force base in the southern keys. Sometimes it was hard paying attention to the fishing watching the jets take off and land.I knew it was a great spot becuase once we got there a couple of other flats baots showd up and had to fish behind us. Len was proud of himself that he had hightailed it there and got us a front row view of the fish coming around the bend. Again it was windy and partly cloudy and as the guest Frank gave me first honors.. Not a minute or so into fishing Len hollared fish at 60 ft 3 o clock. I looked but saw nothing. Why didnt you cast. The fish is gone.. A couple minutes latter I spotted a big fish come up right off the channel and made a quick cast and put the fly right in front of him. I stripped he looked at it I kept stripping but lost sight of the fish and fly, Len screamed hes got hes got it.hes gone. You should have set the hook, I didnt see the take nor did I feel it so I didnt set the hook but figured I was getting my lenniesedown so maybe I would do better next time up.O for two and down in the well I went.
Little did I know that that was the end of the fishing for all practical purposes. The NE wind got stronger as the day went on. Our little honey hole lost its water and we had to move on to no avail and that was the last fish we saw.Because of the weather we went in early . The next day it rained on and off and we never left shore. That night a southern storm from south of Cuba came up and wacked the keys so I left friday hoping to catch a flight north.Couldnt but ended up in the Elbow Room in Ft Lauderdale and had a great time..I talked to lenny a couple days later and he told me the weather turned right after I left light south winds and the fish turned on.
Im hoping to get a few days with gentle breezes this June.
