Todd's last sentence is one of the best snippets of advice I've read about surf fishing. Expanding on it just a little bit:
Approach the water very carefully, when you get about 50 feet away just stop and look. Give it a couple of minutes. Try to get a sense for the rythm. If its not too rough it will become apparaent. Focus on the area just behind the point where the waves recede - or the bit thats always covered. Depending on the location, you can probably cover that area with less than 60ft of line. Approach slowly and quietly and DO NOT STEP IN THE WATER. Whatever you do, resist the temptation. Chances are the fish will be right at your feet. Even if you can't see them, make yourself believe they are there. Make your first casts from dry land and work your way down to the edge slowly. Instread of casting straight at the horizon, think of that area of water you focused on as a narrow river and fish that almost parallel to the shore.
For what its worth, thats the way I begin my surf sessions these days and it works for me. Maybe it will work for you. I hope you overcome your intimidation. The surf is the best place on the planet.
