Boy am I going to get burnt for this when Kenny gets back! Oh well, you asked and I'll give you my personal thoughts on your questions. 1. Often the plug can do as well (and maybe better) than a fly, and sometimes the fly is more productive. But for me that's not the point. In my eye, fishing on the fly is much more "up close and personal". It's a much more personal experience (to me) than plugging. It's a "get into it" thing. To over simplify it; I like it better.
2.With spinning gear you can still fish with flies on the line as trailers, droppers, with casting eggs, and plugs. You may not be able to present it the way a fly line and rod can. But often ignorance is blist too. I also believe the fly tends to slow me down and allows me to fish an area more completely and with diff. techniques than I would with conventional gear. I dare not mention that I often find conventional rather "Ho-Hum",, even when into fish heavily. (for me it's not the quantity, but the quality of the experience) Some of my "best fishing days" have been when I never saw a fish, bite, or a strike.
3. I'm not a purist by any means. I will flyfish, plug, chunk, live line, and bowfish (although rare lately). Variety IS the spice of life.
As you said, "flyfish for the sake of catching fish" may not be the best of reasons for selecting the fly. If all you're interested in is quantity for the measure of your sucess, I feel there are better methods,,,, well, probably not "better", but less demanding in the learning dept. and quicker in the instant gratification fields. That's my personal (politicly incorrect?) impression. I'm not trying to discourage anybody, but I've seen too often when an aquantance goes out and buys a fly outfit because he saw me having so much fun with it only to find out after a week or two that there's more to it than meets the eye. And quits because they "have better luck with plugs." Takes time to learn what works and when (like into the wind). My opinion, it's not for everyone. Just like sex, everyone is not into the same style and it's neither right nor wrong. Just personal freedom of choice. Ain't it wonderful?
Okay guys, let the burning(s) begin.
