Jeepers John,
I do not fish there ever but I hear people and read about people who fish there on the site.
I do not fish the Conn. shore very often either but I do fish R.I. and Mass quite a bit.
I love fishing with plugs and such like you do and I also love the fly rod.

I will take a look at some charts and try to get a feel for the coast on the north side of the island.
All I can do is try.

The prevailing wind is SW and makes for a lee shore much of the time which makes it easy for the fly rod I would think.
If the current is East and West then that wind would move the current edges away from the beach if the wind was strong.
The shallow edges of points facing the current out on the tips - would be prime in strong wind and coves on the half moons would hold staging bait.
Lots of eddy water?

What kinds of bait do you have that you have witnessed yourself.
The small stuff that is constant not the big stuff that gets the weekenders imaginations all worked up.

Ledges running to headlands?
Bolder fields?
Cobble butted up against sand or gravel?

So much to wonder about.

Do you fish Shelter Island?
Break it down into little pieces.
I will look at the charts that you point out and I will be glad to discuss it.
