Hi Ken,
Wow, thanks so much for the help! First off I'll state that I have never fished Shelter Island as, even though there are miles of prime water, nearly all of it is in the hands of private ownership and the SIPD do not look kindly upon tresspassers. Anyway, I'll address some of the other questions you had (as you can see I'm stuck at home instead of out fishing as I should be - gotta watch the kids tonight...!). You are very correct in your general assessment of the typical winds and currents present on LI's north shore. There are several points that look good on paper but tend to be the domain of the plugger as most of the best fishable water is off the beach. I used to fish Orient Point for quite a while, heavy pencil poppers cast as far out as imaginable to these outer reefs but when you look down at the water swirling around your favorite rock you will often see thousands of small crabs floating by in the swift current. Never caught a bass in that close-in water and never saw one but that don't mean they weren't there (perhaps a crab fly tossed around there would have worked wonders...?) Sandeels are the predominant bait on most of the shores here through the early summer until they head off the beach in July. A few good creeks such as the Nissequogue River have been told to host cinder worm hatches but I personally have never witnessed one there. Yes, I know I'm rambling but I'm trying to think out loud. Can you recommend a good set of flies for these waters? Just as there are thousands of plugs to use there are countless more flies that are out there... Thanks John
